Christian Lowensprung gave a score of 6 / 10. Comments were: since the artist gave me two choices, I reviewed Designs. A very special song, mostly of vocals and piano in the foreground. Reminds me a bit of radiohead. What eludes me though is why the artist haven't made any download option available. This has nothing to do with the music itself, but I really feel it needs to be mentioned. A person who decides to visit the artist page will soon forget his / her visit, or why her / he went there if there isn't anything to take home, like a souvenir or something.
Ah well, good song nonetheless, but lacks any memorable moments. Hence the need for that little extra something mentioned above, yes?

Norm Bowler gave a score of 7.08 / 10. Comments were: This is a moody modern rock song. The first comparison that comes to mind is Arcade Fire. This style of music, though fairly recent has developed its particular hallmarks -- strong contrasts between acoustic instruments and sudden highly distorted bursts; mumbling vocals with a lot of reverb; and an emo-anthem mindset. "Covered In Acrylic" meets this checklist, which either works for it or against it, depending on how you feel about the style. Ten years from now this will either sound classic or dated, depending on whether this approach passes the test of time.
The song is well put together -- nice arrangments and contrasts, good dynamics. This is professional sounding work.
I marked the lyrics down because it's hard to understand some of the words, so I can't judge them well.
Overall, this song hits the mark. I'm just wondering if its their mark. It's the classic problem of wanting to sound of a piece with current musical trends while still needing to stake out your own ground

The mix is muddled and detracts from the singer he seems buried alive. Some of your ideas are interesting but seems like there is still work to be done (like practicing) to make this an appealing listen.

That's always important in songs like this. The answer is an unequivocal yes. This is a very indie kind of song, and it's not striving to be more than that. Think Arcade Fire on a smaller scale and you'll have these guys in your sights. This is an arrangement which actually improves the quality of what would likely have been an average song at best. But it gets me wanting to hear more, and that's what any good song should do. I think this one might surprise you if you give it the time to soak in. Nice job, Asbury! I'll be keeping you on my radar ...

The Goat gave a score of 7.25 / 10. Comments were: I love this kind of writing and arranging. The performances are as solid as they come. About the only thing I didn't like was a mix that sounded "two dimensional." Get a fresh set of ears in the mixing booth, and leave the band out of it. Everything sits too close to the "front" and leaves the vocalist's voice working too hard to be "heard." I could listen to stuff like this all day long. It's very fresh. I liked the groove and the song. the lyrics are sort of disconnected and I'm not sure what the total message is, but they make nice disturbing little word pictures.
Some critiques: The song has no bassline. Adding one would add interest and drive, and a big bottom would balance the thin and high lead vocal. The harmony vocals are off pitch and don't phrase with the lead vocal well at all. the song would be better if you took them out. Better yet, retrack them and clean them up.
Finally, the backing track is floaty and ethereal, but the vocals are mixed dry and way out front. As a result, it sounds like a backing track with vocals on top, not a single song. I would recommend remixing to make the vocals sit with the backing tracks better. It could be something as simple as bringing the volume down 3db and adding a touch of reverb.

Christian Lowensprung gave a score of 7.12 / 10. Comments were: Jonathan Sanders has here produced a very brave song. What amazes me, is that the vocals is the most dominating thing in the track. Actually the vocals are overly represented. So there isn't a problem getting the message, or the lyrics if you will. I tried this song several times on myself, and I must admit, I didn't like it much at first. But it grows on you, and you appreciate it more if you listen to it more than once. Which in most cases is what happens when you throw a song in a play list for it to play at random. Jonathan takes up a very sad subject, which is suicide. Or at least, that is what I get out of the song. On a more personal note, I had a friend once, who chose that way to end his life. It was not easy to accept his choice, nor was it easy to move on after that. But life goes on, as with all things. That is what I got out of the song. So to you: Either this song will speak to you, or it won't. But it is good nonetheless. Recommended.

The left and right instrumentation is way in the background so when the drums and vocals came in (panned close to center) it caught me off guard. The dry vocals also caught me off guard. My initial thought was I don't know if I'm going to like this, but the opening line "I got a gun for the power trip but I haven't had the guts to put a bullet in it yet" demanded that I keep listening! What a powerful attention getting line! It's so good I would suggest getting back to that a little sooner and more often. It's the hook. And what a simple, powerful, hook indeed. If it is interspersed throughout the song more, you may not need to repeat it five times at the end. The vocals get a little pitchy here and there but are solid.
The lyrics move the story along but I miss it in a couple spots, such as when you ask "what about you?" You don't seem to expand on that or speak from the other person’s point of view. It seems the lyrics could go further, deeper. Being that suicide is the most selfish act a person can commit, maybe you could expand on how “he thinks” people would react if he did go through with it. Also, friends and family can get so caught up in there own selfish little worlds that they miss the signs or give canned little words of encouragement that do more harm than good. You touched on that a little. Maybe that could be expanded as well.
The music is good. Very simple, minimal, and because of the subject matter, it works. I would even be careful on how much harmony and vocal double tracking you do. This is a very isolated, alone individual.
Typically I wouldn’t go here, but do to the subject matter I feel I must. Just incase this is not just a story and is more of a personal battle, I’d like to say that this life can be hideously painful, yet it is still a gift from God and only God can take the hideousness and pain away. Being that I know nothing about you other than what I just heard I can at least comment on that. You’ve certainly got a lot of talent as a singer/songwriter and you do have much to live for. I know that may sound totally trite but I mean it in the most sincere possible way.
Subject matter aside, this song is moody, has a good vibe, and is catchy. All the makings for a very good song! I am anxious to hear the final mix!

Ms. Commerciality gave a score of 3 / 10. Comments were: Downloading this I see the word "rough" - so I am critiquing it AS A DEMO. Here goes... First off, you're on the right track by keeping it simple and clear. Submitting this and working on it will keep it easier to correct and allow others to get the basic idea. Lyrically this needs more work. I get the feeling this is about committing suicide, but listening to the song over and over, I don't know why the subject is considering it. What's going on in his/her life to make this a possibility? Who is talking to him/her about not doing it? And, when you talk about "power trip" and "do nothing crazy" - could this person be considering murder of someone? We don't really know what's going on at all. That has to be explained. Musically, I'm not certain as to what the verses are and what the chorus is. I have a general idea because of the repitition, but there needs to be more change and distinction between all the parts. Lastly, work on the vocals. There are several areas where you are out of tune. Since this is a demo, that won't be critical, but it does help. Good start!

The production is abit thin for my taste. I like things meatier with substance. Am so glad you didn’t have the guts to put a bullet in it yet and hope you never do. Interesting contrast with the delicate gentle vocal over the darker lyric. Good job Jonathan.

Kind of like the stuff that Phat Boy Slim makes, and Daft Punk's previous work. The sound quality is good, and the mix seems way above standard fare. So to all DJs and casual listeners, this is a nice song to add to your collection. I even danced it about the room myself on one occasion. Recommended.

It's smooth and catchy, and though it becomes a bit repetitive I think this is something fans of the genre will enjoy. Not too much to say beyond that. A good track you may want to hear a few times, though I don't know how much staying power it'll have once it gets stuck in your head and starts to wear out its welcome.

Very 70s kool and gang meets peter framptonish in the new millenium. My baby title has been used a few times but you redo it with a freshness and groove that had me noddin along. The original song wasn't available anymore, so I listened to Sunshine Angel. A beautiful mix between folk and pop. Both female and male vocals are very good, and as subtle as you would want to expect from this type of material. But what caught me ablaze was the incredible atmosphere within this song. Kind of melancholic. Powerful. I didn't listen to "storyu" as mentioned, but ben nelson band is one of the best bands I've ever heard within this genre. I dare say that it beats much of the stuff I have heard on radio. Recommended to all dreamers out there.

Acoustic guitar meets the occasional other instrument, but with vocals that are low key and somewhat too dry for the lyrical content. It ain't folk, that's for sure, unless you think Dave Matthews is folk, and this isn't even Dave Matthews caliber, though the art rock leanings suggest he's got aspirations to that level. Needs some more production time and some effort in evening out the mix (particularly the vocals) before this one's ready to be a prime time player. It's a start though. And the second vocalist, the female, really has a good voice. This one might even benefit from putting her at the front instead of the guy. They just don't duet well.

I'd like to hear your voice without so much double tracking (I should talk, I'm the king of double tracking the vox). Good lead guitar. There are some syncopation issues with the acoustic guitar here and there. Might want to tighten up the rhythm section a little. It's this big huge sound that kinda stays in one place. Yet, maybe that's the point. I gather from the lyrics that you are in prison. Now that I'm on my 4th or 5th listen and have put aside the "it sounds like this or that" and am just listening to a song, it's growing on me... Glitchy ending, you may want to look into that - it starts fading out and then pops back in for a second at the end. Overall, a simple groove that tells a story. Both have a lot of potential. The groove could use some dynamics. Change it up a bit, let it breath. The story could go deeper into the loneliness, the desperation to get out, the importance of hope, etc. There is a dated sound here but you picked a good date! Keep going, keep pushing it, I could see this a little more gritty, a little less polished.

Seph also put great effort into singing this 80's classic derge and make it somehow his own. Good try but to Mongos' ears this tune belongs with Robbie and the boys. Seph has some talent going but Mongo think he need to loosen up a bit and put some of that effort into writing his own material. Somehow, we possess it better when it our own.

The Goat gave a score of 5.83 / 10. Comments were: Right from the opening acoustic guitar strums, I was expecting something very very well done. I'm not 100% convinced that I found it. The production is good. This tracks sounds excellent thru a standard-issue pc soundcard thru a set of $60(USD) Audio-Technica headphones. I like the voice well enough as well. This Adult Contemporary Acoustic Pop/Rock track is pleasing to listen to, but there's something that just doesn't grab hold of my ears and set me back in the chair. A lack of conviction in the singer's voice perhaps? A lack of connection between the time the song was tracked and when it finally reaches us, the listener? I'm not sure. All in all this artist has something to say I believe, but I don't think this was the song to get there with.

When you kick it in you either need more than just one guitar or lighten up on the vocal intensity. Maybe soften the melody of the chorus a bit. Although, if you could make the music huge and intense and sound like you're really flying higher than the stars the song would be much more believable. Now, if you want to keep it acoustic, maybe pan two acoustic guitars one to each side and turn them up. Remember, the mood, and musical accompaniment of a song need to support the lyrics and message.
His hand fits perfectly in yours because you can see it in his eyes? That didn't really tell me much. It's poetic, but empty. The only thing you really told me about this guy is that the light in his eyes makes you smile. That is sweet. I can actually picture his blue-eyed glance making you smile. As a listener, I need more of that. Dig! Get real! There must be more to this guy if he can take you higher than the stars! And please tell me it's not sex. Tell me about his character, his kindness, how good he treats you.
Keep going, keep writing, and don't settle, especially lyrically. You have a great voice and a lot of potential!

I enjoyed the chorus especially and I really like the clean, unproduced sound of the recording. the guitar tone is excellent and well captured. Good effort and a nice song but not enough of a hook to be a hit. But what the hell, I would take this song over "Who let the dogs out?" anyday!!! Give this tune a listen and give props to Mae and Lindsey and their engineer who recorded that acoustic guitar so well!

And the lyrics ("higher ... higher ... he takes me higher than the sky and makes me feel like I never stopped smiling ... higher than the stars above, all because of you and your love") are as cliché as they come. Sorry, but this one's not worth much time. Maybe there's some songwriting talent here, but it's not coming through properly in this song.

Nibbish gave a score of 7.08 / 10. Comments were: "Higher" begins with a bit of acoustic guitar played and one instantly thinks "oh great, it's going to be one of 'those' songs...". The initial verse really doesn't help matters any, as the lyrics are fairly standard, but when the chorus hits.... Suddenly all the conceptions you had about the song have flown out the window, and it turns out to be a quite fine pop song. Whichever of the '2 girls from midcentral Minnesota' is doing the singing here deserves props. She takes a mediocre song with merely passable recording quality and turns it into something special. The song doesn't overstay its welcome, clocking in at a lean 2 minutes, 46 seconds. In the end, this song - shockingly enough - is the type of song you play once, then again, then again. Not a bad thing at all.

Hey wait a minute...It's DONE Already??? Where is the rest of it!!! Come on! Shove a middle 8 in there and keep it going!!! Or better yet, replace the end instrumental bit with a fun sing along twist on the chorus. It is so fun and catchy don't feel bad about letting it go for awhile!

A Beatlesque song in a lot of ways in terms of chord changes and break downs. The recording quality is pretty loose as I said but the drum tones are very muddy. The hook line of the song is cool and catchy. I think this is a song with lots of potential to be a pretty cool track with some editing (too long) and tightening of the recording. Keep at it David!

It's only two and a half minutes long, so had the chorus had a hook to it, there'd be a lot more reason to go back and keep listening to it again and again -- the essence of a good pop single. The arrangement keeps things light and bouncy, and the vocalist has the right sound for the song. The lyrics are pure 'i want to leave my girl but can't' fluff, and I could very easily imagine hearing this song on the soundtrack for a movie or TV show. The sound wavers a little at times, and the ending is a little abrupt, but it does little to mar this extremely enjoyable song.

As for the lyrics, why would he touch your face and not continue using his hand to trace your lips? Some aspects of the lyrics are intriguing and different but in a way, I feel that I've heard this all before. It would be nice with a song like this to have a twist or two.
The mix changes a lot, which keeps it interesting. When it gets really heavy the drums get pushed to the back of the mix and the pulse of the song is lost a bit. Also, the vocals get lost here and there. I'm not sure if they should just be a little louder in spots or maybe they are over compressed.
Certainly a lot of time and effort went into the production of this song, which is nice to hear. For example the little breakdown towards the end, "And now I'm not afraid, and now I'm not afraid" is really cool.

Ms. Commerciality gave a score of 4.16 / 10. Comments were: I hear a little influence from Berlin and Evanessence in here and that is a good thing for me because I like those groups. The mix on this is too high for me. I want more bass. I also want less noise. I felt it was "too fuzzy" throughout the song. The effect used? The vocals were not believeable to me. I felt that there wasn't enough emotion in them. At times it was almost like screaming for me. In some parts, there's just too much vocal. Change the voice to be more harmonious when using the background vocals. Right now they seem to similar in spots and almost like they are fighting. Lyrically, it wasn't too bad. I see how you talk about the guy and that he's your addiction. I would like a little more story line in there though as to why he is your addiction...more guts to the song. Right now it's a bit shallow and just lines that really don't take me anywhere emotionally. Tell me more... Good start on this. Just take it further.

'First' is R&B that seems to have a little bit of a multiple personality as it's got sort of a slow 'crunk' beat, combined with Jay's vocals (more on them in a second), which seem to be going for more of the smooth R&B sound. I'm not sure it mixes so well. Jay's voice doesn't work for this song, I think he sounds off for large chunks. While that may simply be what he was trying to do with his voice, I can say that a song with vocals like this wouldn't get very far commercially. In my opinion, the vocals should be redone in a more straightforward manner. The rap interlude is alright, it's done competantly enough, but the rhyming is nothing special, something a little more enegetic might be in order. Production-wise, everything seems a little flat. The beat has life to it, but the production (especially on the vocals) flattens it out too much. There IS a bit of potential to this one, but it has a ways to go to unlock it.

Comments were: This was an interesting song and, although I felt it was done well instrumentation wise, vocals and performance, I might have a tough time selling the song due to the nature of the subject. I felt a little wierd about the posidy here. The subject wasn't really "skippy happy" like the music was. I also had some issues with the message and couldn't really tell what the second verse had to do with the first. The story was also a bit short and thus didn't really finish what you were saying or explain anything in general. You have the idea of a song here, you have a good start on the music/instrumentation, now all you have to do is go back and really look at what you have and try to "finish" it per se. You can have more up-tempo music, but make it fit your completed story lines. Right now, for me, its just a good start.

The vocals were also pretty good, with nice phrasings and timing on behalf of the vocalist. The biggest let down was that the song didn't feel terribly original. The chord pattern has been well used, as has some of the guitar fills. If Songwriter Demo can work something more unique into his work he should really have something to show.

All in all, I thought that this was a decent demo should you be looking for someone to record it. If you decide to make it a product, I'd work on the vocals or find a different singer. Put a little more edge on the vocals to bring up the "spunk" in the song. Overall, good job.

His songs are all consistant...good form/structure, nice changes, good vocals, solid songwriting. It's nice to hear all of this and I think I'm a fan. On the other side, though, I'd have to say it's not really unique and THAT is what's going to be hard to overcome. Don't take that as not good, that is not at all what is being said. It's just to say that there are a lot of "you" out there. Marketing is what makes the difference between making it and not making it. If you can find that exposure, I think you are going to go far. Make your opportunities, follow through, be nice and always be positive no matter how bleek things seem sometimes. As far as this song, I can't tell you to fix what I believe to be right on the money.

Well written song with a very pop, commercial edge. Again, I found the production smooth but not quite cohesive for some reason. I sounds like the vocal are getting compressed too much when Todd pushes on the pre-chorus and chorus'. The verse vocal lines are fine so I think that could be what is catching my ear as a problem. It's so wonderfully dark and gritty that I'm reminded of the likes of Nine Inch Nails, which is no mean feat. I love the crispy and deep percussion, the synth sounds, the tight vocals, the sexy guitar playing and the lyrics too. I'm not sure about the wind - it seems a bit out of place in the mix, especially when it's loud. Never mind, this is a must listen.

The vocals keep the creepy edge going, blending in a little Marilyn Manson (I keep thinking "Apple of Sodom" even though this is a much more sunny arrangement). Rock with a slight industrial edge and crisp presentation set this one apart. The vocals lean toward the cliché side of things, but the arrangement itself is beyond reproach. I'll give this one my recommendation if only because it relentlessly dug itself into my mind and wouldn't let go. Interesting, indeed, Mr. Kovacevich. The lyrics kill the mood in the end, however and lower my X-Factor score along with the lyric score.

Artistically this could of gone anywhere given the tone at first. Initially it seemed you were going to go for being set up and questioning the authority but alas you went the predictable route. Christian radio would no doubt like this tune especially with the redemption ending. Lyrically interesting and thoughtful a nice change from most songs. Large in production, melodically appealing and many layers this makes for an enjoyable listen. Well done.

It definately isn't cookie cutter work like so many of the songs one hears being performed out there toady. It did feel too long for me before the vocals come in and then the vocals seemed to miss in a few places - they didn't quite stay on pitch. The prosidy of everything worked really well for me. The music definately enhanced the lyrics. The lyrics seemed to work pretty decently overall, although there were a few spots that I wanted clarified a bit more. It could be just how I heard it. I'd have liked to see these in writing. It was also nice to hear the "stereo" sounds going from one side to the other. I use that every now and again and I don't hear it used that prominently anymore in other works. Cool. I thought you did a good job overall.

Well, at least he didn't submit one of the ID songs, which would have provoked a three page diatribe explaining the many misconceptions and delusions of the ID crowd. But i digress... The song itself is quite well crafted, with a wall of sound reminiscent of Genesis (the band, that is). The lyrics are well-written. The vocals are solid, which made me think that maybe there should have been a bit more melody and singing rather than the double-tracked narrative that Mike employs here. Overall, a fairly impressive and thought-provoking work.

The singer (Jonny Don't, ah... get it?) is fantastic, with his ramblings and crazed "hallelujah!!" shout about halfway through. I wish more people made music like this, but they don't, and they never will. This is the Dont's territory, to be weird without being off-putting; to be a little crazy while never losing that attention to detail. Consider me an instant fan.

"Indie Rock/Pop" is the new "Alternative" for the 21st century -- a refreshing genre of styles that incorporate sunshine pop, Brian Wilson influences, retro-golden age of pop hooks, crazy psychedelic sixties clothing, glam makeup and all manner of things nonsensical. The Dont's were named CMJ/Sonicbids Artist of the Week in February 2007 -- and deservedly so. BlahBlahBlah exemplifies the spirit of lo-fi indie madness that has been increasingly growing in popularity over the past five years in the US. Loud, noisey, scratchy, interesting, intelligently constructed noise-pop -- goat be lovin' this stuff. Uh oh -- goat be dancin' -- hips beware -- love that guitar!
